Chris Okunbur

singer/guitarist performing grassroots music

Born on the banks of the River Mersey, of Mayo and Manx origins, Chris Okunbor was lulled to sleep by the grand songs of Ireland, blues from the old Delta musicians, and foghorn music from the ferry boats.

Throughout the 70's she was inspired by the thriving folk scene in Europe, and roots blues music (from the Deep South of London!) – listening to artists such as Jo Anne Kelly, Paddy Tunney, Duster Bennett, and Martin Carthy.

A terminal nomad, Chris spent a year in Australia in '74, surviving as a shearer's cook, deckhand, and general lay-about. Displaced by Cyclone Tracy, she blew into Cape Town, and played the festivals and clubs around South Africa and carried on traversing the globe and playing music for many years, collecting songs along the way.

Chris's music reflects her origins and global experiences – a vocalist/guitarist covering songs of the people — from a grand "sean-nos" song of Ireland, to one of her own songs….from a heartfelt elopement chant of the Luri tribe, to the blues of Mississippi Fred McDowell.
