In the dying decades of the last century, the shadowy and iconoclastic HuldreFolk ('hidden people') appeared out of nowhere with their unique combination of stories and songs, and then, almost as suddenly, disappeared into the mists of memory. HuldreFolk were known for their unusual songs and stories, and an adventurous approach to music and lyric. Drawing inspiration from all over the modern, and not so modern world – the sad and the serious, the pleasant and the delightful, HuldreFolk demonstrate how music is indeed the mirror of the human condition.
ONE CONCERT ONLY!
In the intervening years, there have been unconfirmed sightings – in ones and twos and, much more rarely, threes. Once in a blue moon, you may be fortunate enough to catch them! August 19th will see one of those rare occurrences. To celebrate the rare and regrettably short visit to Australia of long-time folk stalwart Victor Mishalow,The original HuldreFolk trio will reunite at North By Northwest Folk Club for ONE CONCERT ONLY!
VICTOR MISHALOW ... The Carlingford Cossack
Academic, author, teacher, performer, and Merited Artist of Ukraine. Victor is an internationally acclaimed exponent of the ancient sixty-five stringed Bandura the voice and soul of Ukraine. His reputation extends far beyond Australia to the United States, Canada, and the countries of the former Soviet Union. He has played at venues as far apart as the Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House, the Los Angeles Olympics, and a Royal Command Performance in the Netherlands. Currently resident in Toronto, Canada, he is the founder and leader of the Canadian Bandurist Capella.
YURI THE STORYTELLER
Long before television and radio, before books and newspapers, there was the Storyteller. In every culture, every village, every town, he held the history of his people on the tip of his tongue. In the ageless glow of candlelight, Yuri the Russian Storyteller captivates his audience with the magic of the classic folktale. The archetypal village storyteller, Yuri has appeared at festivals throughout Australia (World Expo in Brisbane, Port Fairy, Maleny, and the National in Canberra), as well as in the UK and Ireland.
PAUL HEMPHILL
Something old, something new, something that may take us disappearing down the foggy ruins of time – pushing poetic licence to its hazy limits, reacquainting us with his particular take on history, imparting a unique perspective on pain and pandemonium, and sharing with us dubious anthems to power, pride, and prejudice. Multi-award winning songwriter Paul Hemphill has performed throughout Australasia and the UK, as a solo artist and as a member of HuldreFolk, combining poetry and music, horror and humour. Vikings, Romans, Mongols, and the Spanish Inquisition have all faced the music!

North By Northwest Poetry and Folk Club meets in The Cornucopia Cafe, and is one of the best acoustic venues in Sydney. There will be refreshments for sale and BYO's are welcome.
