In June, Eight O'Clock Sharp hosts a night of songs of a political bent with Tony Eardley plus the Solidarity Choir.
Since migrating from England in the mid-1990s, Blue Mountains singer Tony Eardley has been quietly building a reputation for poetic and lyrical songwriting. A regular performer at folk festivals and clubs, Tony has previously sung at Cafechurch with Maree Robertson, Liz Frencham and others as The Rosewood Project and is an occasional collaborator with Brisbane singer Helen Rowe.
Tony is also a member of several a cappella groups, including Ecopella and the enigmatic Spooky Men's Chorale. His vocal style is sometimes compared to that of Nick Drake, and with melodic guitar and bouzouki accompaniment his performances are always moving and engaging. His demo CD has received wide airplay on folk radio programs and one of these days he'll finish the real one!
Solidarity choir are often found singing to support a cause. They recently launched the 2005 Oxfam Walk Against Want, as well as singing songs on the street to keep the walkers powering on. They also sang at a meeting of the Leichhardt Stop the War group.
Singing in solidarity is their trade – on the streets, on picket lines, at folk festivals, at gatherings of celebration and of sorrow, and also just for fun on the beach, or in the park (not to mention in the pub!). Their songs of freedom and struggle come from all around the world, including Australia. Tonight they have a rare opportunity to sing a whole stack of songs chosen not because they fit a particular cause but just because they're songs they like to sing.

Some of the songs are serious, some are tongue in cheek, many of them are in languages other than English. They're all songs to change the world.

Just a short walk from Glebe Pt Rd,(bus routes 370, 431-433). Tickets: $14/$10. Free coffee and tea. BYO and smoke-free. Doors open 7:30pm. The Cafechurch Space has already established its reputation as a fine acoustic music venue. It is set to host more folk events in 2005. It is an intimate, candle-lit, concert setting where the performance is the focus.
