Largest Bottle Orchestra

On 12 October 2000 in Toledo, Ohio, USA, local flautists Patricia Rentner and Roselyn Smith broke the record for the largest bottle orchestra by blowing into a line of 470 strategically arranged glass bottles. The arrangement played was a nursery rhyme medley including "This Old Man", "Hickory Dickory Dock", and "Mary had a Little Lamb".

Patricia, who graduated from Ohio State University with a degree in education, teaches the flute, and conducts Ottawa Hills Flute Choir. Roselyn is a flautist and also plays the piccolo for the Perrysburg Symphony.


Largest Classical Concert Attendance

An estimated 800,000 people attended a free open-air concert given by the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Zubin Mehta, in Central Park, New York City, USA, on July 5, 1986, as part of the Statue of Liberty Weekend.

Largest Simultaneous Percussion Performance

The largest percussion performance was held at the Hong Kong Coliseum, Hong Kong, China, on July 2, 2002, when 10,102 people played a percussive rhythm – entitled Ten Thousand Hearts Beat As One – for over six minutes.

The performance was part of "The Music of the Dragons" concert, and the instruments played were: cow bell, hand drum, guiro (a wooden ribbed cylinder, often in the shape of a fish, that is scraped with a stick), triangle, maraca and chocalho de Platinela (a hand-held frame mounted with various jingles that is shaken, much like a tamourine).


Largest Orchestra

The world's largest orchestra consisted of 6,452 musicians from the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and music students from throughout British Columbia. They played at BC Place Stadium, Vancouver, Canada, on May 15, 2000.


Largest Ballet Class

A total of 530 people from 41 ballet schools took part in an hour-long ballet class à la barre organized by Cape Town City Ballet at Canal Walk shopping centre, Cape Town, South Africa, on October 12, 2003. Participants ranging in age from 10 to 52 years old were led by the Cape Town City Ballet's publicist – and former company member – Andrew Warth.
