From Latcho Drom to Gypsy Caravan, the music of Eastern Europe has become an inspiration! Direct from Slovakia this 17 piece group of dancers and musicians is a breath of fresh air in traditional dance and music.
The Ifju Szivek Slovak State Hungarian Dance Ensemble is a professional state funded dance group based in Bratislava, Slovakia. The dance is authentic, subtle and beautifully staged. The music, with violins, viola, double bass, vocals and cimbalom, ranges from haunting Gypsy laments to the wild Hungarian, Romanian and Slovak dance music. The musicians are the best in their field - they are to traditional Hungarian music what Stefan Grapelli and Django Reinhart are to swing jazz - totally awe inspiring!
Dance for strings percussion and piano is a unique look at the Hungarian, Slovakian, Gypsy and Jewish dance and music that inspired Bela Bartok and his work. They are supported by local Aboriginal dance group, Koomurri and Newcastle High Dance Group.
You Think YOU Can Dance, the boisterous and engaging children’s show, is set in a classroom where exhilarating live music and spectacular acrobatic dance succeed in engaging even the most reluctant of young scholars. The show allows the audience to see the folk traditions of Eastern Europe in an exciting new way. Touring Australia for the second time, Ifju Szivek will perform at the National Multicultural Festival in Canberra, the Seymour Centre in Sydney, Illawarra Performing Arts Centre in Wollongong and The Playhouse, Newcastle this February 2009.
