World Hits
Review of world music compilation CD

By Julius Timmerman

A compilation of popular world music hits and theme songs from the last few decades. Many are African or Afro-American like Toure Kunda, Peter Tosh with his classic The Harder They Come, Youssou N’Dour with 7 Seconds, Mongo Santamaria with Watermelon Man, Miriam Makeba with Pata Pata, Johnny Clegg with Scatterlings of Africa and Manu Dibango with Soul Makossa. Then there’s a sprinkling of Latin in the form of the Lambada from Kaoma and Bamboleo from the Gypsy Kings. Not to forget one of Santana’s classics, Oye Como Va.

Funky and hip with a touch of exotica, this is an attractive smorgasbord of global chart-toppers.
