Supplementary: 3 - 10 August 2012 +
Friday 3 August

Handsome Young Strangers + Urban Guerillas + Subtle Vagrants (Rex Havoc, Barbecue Brown, Steph Miller).  The Sando might be in receivership but its spirit lives on in Newtown. The driving forces behind two of the bands synonymous with the Sando in the '80s & '90s are alive & well & playing regularly again in Newtown. Ken Stewart’s Urban Guerillas &, from Roaring Jack, Steph Miller’s band Winterstation keep the flag flying for the passionate & energetic independent music that helped create the Sando’s reputation. The untimely passing of Alistair Hulett from Roaring Jack in 2010 & the memorial & tribute concerts that followed reunited old friends from the Sando days & introduced new ones, bringing Sydney City Trash, Handsome Young Strangers, Steph Miller & the Urban Guerillas in concert together. Since then they continue to share stages around Sydney.  When any of these bands are playing at the Union Hotel or at the Townie (Town Hall Hotel) it is reminiscent of the Sandringham in its glory days. These venues have preserved the timeless intimacy of having the band in the front bar playing at street level with minimalist production.  Town Hall Hotel, 325 King St, Newtown.  9-12.15pm.  Free.  Ken Stewart 0418 651 150. Lawson ‘Live’: CHANGE of line-up for the concert, dinner & dance. Due to unavailability of band members, Christine Wheeler’s CD launch has been cancelled.  Instead, at 6pm: Nick Szentkuti (acoustic guitar, harmonica), with originals, blues, traditional tunes & contemporary songs - featuring Nick’s song about Lawson, & a new one about Nigel Foote. A resident of Hazelbrook for 5 years, Nick became well known performing with his group 5 Leaves Left.  7pm: Laura Zarb - guitar wielding, foot stomping, vocally vivacious & slightly eccentric singer songwriter. Funky folk flavoured by Ani Difranco, Kentucky bluegrass, Texas honky-tonk, & the music of her father Matt Zarb & his 5 brothers.  8pm: Danko’s (formerly Danko’s Dilemma) - exciting & eclectic band of Blue Mountains musicians. Ian Host (vocals, acoustic guitar, ukulele), Jamie Bloodworth (drums), Rob Thompson (harmonica), Neil Sagewood (keys, bass), Brett Dennis (electric guitars, dobro). Originals & covers. From New Orleans grooves, to jazzy feels, to blues, roots, r’n’b & rock, Danko’s will keep you dancing!   Mid Mountains Community Centre. 6-10pm.  $15, $12, children free.  Delicious food for sale. Frank the Poet on Radio National, 1.05pm. August 2012 marks the 151st anniversary of the death of the convict Francis MacNamara. According to Les Murray, MacNamara's epic work 'A Convict's Tour to Hell' should be placed right at the beginning of English literature in Australia. Folklorist, & co-producer of this feature, Mark Gregory has spent 30 years searching for this often elusive poet, accompanied by his sometimes doubting partner, film maker Maree Delofski.
